I liked this mural on the west side highway before I even knew he was my undergrad professors mentor at Yale. We’ve even hung out with him over at George Parrino’s annual parties where he took quite a liking to Amanda and sang her songs, asking her to be his home nurse. Can’t blame the guy for trying. Like everything else in Manhattan, real estate has fucked up something perfect.
Not many people get to have something like this on their website -
“You are my mentor. For years, I always asked, what would Knox think of my painting?”
- Bob Rauschenberg

Thanks for the post and the shot of the Venus fragment. Kind of like sitting at a concert behind an ogre, nothing you can do about the blocked view, but the music is still there, still beautiful.

Knox Martin is certainly one of the greatest masters of all times. To be completely honest with you, Ben, — there is really nothing “poor” about this former teacher of yours!
Everything Knox touches is art at its loftiest height,– no matter how casually his approach to the subject matter. His touch breathes life upon inanimate objects while the world is astounded to see them walk away laughing, dancing heartily, giving out the loveliest song from the depth of the wood and a royal fragrance in the neighborhood of flowers,–all accomplished with nothing less than a gorgeous effect of utter magic!
I have had the honor of observing Master Knox Martin at his work for the past 30 years. I have seen how this man single-handedly transformed European painting,– how he reinvented the nude,– and how a whole new paradigm has come into being through his profound genius,– so unlike any others prior to his own emergence!
The finest moment of painting’s evolution has arrived as a result of a radical revolution by this one-man-army called Knox Martin!
The works of Knox Martin will illuminate the darkness of our Ages and rejuvenate future civilizations. TIt is by no means declared as an empty rhetoric but rather, a most realistic assessment of our current situation. Simply put: America is blessed to have Knox Martin as her native son!
Until Knox’s works have been thoroughly understood, the world remains un-enlightened and the epidemic of blindness (to beauty) will simply continue unabated.

Knox Martin is the bridge from the art of the 20th century to the art of the 21st century. Not only is he the greatest living painter, he is also the greatest art critic I have ever encountered. He has been my mentor and my very good friend.
