Action Group for World Solidarity – Advertisement

As disturbing as the messages are in this campaign, I love the design and the old world look of the posters. They look like a cross between a Bollywood movie ad and some of those medical posters. To support the Action Group for World Solidarity go here.

Created by Ogilvy Frankfurt and illustrated by Martin Popp (more after break…)

My First Presentations of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

Above is “6119 Ilana Sunderland” at ‘Milk Studios‘ which was my first fashion presentation. These images are not the ones that anyone really wants in a magazine but I liked them. I’m learning how to keep a magazine happy from Piero Biasion who has endless years of experience and talent and who’s studio is pushing the images I take out to clients in Europe.

And above is “Geren Ford” also at ‘Milk Studios’

Phillip Seymour Hoffman @ Jay Street-Burrough Hall

I jumped off the 54 bus today to run into Jay Street and catch my train to Bryant Park, when I found myself in the middle of a film set. It took me a few minutes to realize that Phillip Seymour Hoffman was standing right infront of me (I shot this with a 16-35). To prove my unworthiness among the ranks of Paparazzi photographers I got several blurry images of him. Nevertheless it was awesome to see (possibly) my favorite actor in the flesh. His assistants spent the last 15 minutes walking into my line of sight as I was the only person there with a pro-lens and they clearly had nothing better to do. I had to leave to get my Fashion Week pass, otherwise I would’ve got more (images from that to come).

As close to ‘Pocket Billiards’ as I can get in public!

For those of you who’ve played me at pool, you know that I’m no Willie Mosconi but that I can generally hold my own on a table. I have to split credit for the skill between playing grumpy old drunks at the Greystoke Pub on a Sunday afternoon and then coming home and training on our PC with ‘Virtual Pool.’ I was excited to find the application on my phone the other day, and have spent most subway rides and spare moments building my career and winning imaginary money.

You can play several types of pool, although I stick with 8 ball most of the time. The hardest part is getting the cue speed right so you don’t slam the cue ball or apply too much spin, otherwise the realism is close enough to teach you a few things about pool. Although to really learn how to be a great pool player you need to spend some time on a snooker table!

Jen Bekman – Live with Art it’s Good for You!

I shot the Jen Bekman event last night at the White Rabbit. It was a last minute request from a Pratt friend Sara who I think works for Jen on her blog and website material. I don’t think I’m going to win any awards for ‘best event photographer’ even though I got some shots I liked. I hate interrupting people when they seem so deep in conversation, and I got the feeling that (like me) a lot of people were more comfortable using the camera than having it pointed at them. I also really need a Quantum pack to fire my flash quicker and more often, my AA batteries were pretty hot and slow after an hour… excuses escuses.

To pick up some great and fairly inexpensive work go to 20×200.

Indian Anti-Smoking Campaign

This is an interesting ad campaign for the CPAA in India that I’m sure’s going to be affective for the middle and Brahmin class, but wonder how many of the working and untouchable class will even pay attention. How many beedie smoking street sweepers can relate to what a hotel room looks like or a restaurant with leather couches? ‘’The Bleublancrouge concept for the Cancer Patients Aid Association is hard-hitting and it will definitely make a difference in society,’’ said Anita Peter, Director of the CPAA. ‘’We need to create more awareness about this emerging epidemic.’

I personally prefer this campaign as a moustache says a thousand words. (Or check out this animation of the Marlboro man killing his horse)

Frank Rispoli MFA Show – “MindMines”

A Pratt student and friend Frank Rispoli had his MFA Thesis show opening tonight in Steuben. He’s been a fellow photography student for the past few years and has recently switched to ‘New Forms’ to create this colorful installation. He’s what we’d lovingly call in the UK a ‘mature student’ as he began his MFA in the ’70’s and has just finished. He continually amuses me with random stories of his time shooting in NY nightclubs including CBGB and even taught me the meaning and origin of ‘RCH‘ in measuring terms.

I liked the small sculpture tucked away in the corner that showed how he’d really like the work to look with 25 of the ‘mindmines’ in a completely white room. It reminded me of Mike’s work up at Hunter.

Old friends looking at photos

Some old friends from Purchase were in town this weekend and we had them over for dinner. Amanda took some pictures of us all laughing over old college snapshots (that I won’t ever be posted here!). Editing them today made me realize how bad our Canon 40D is at ‘Auto White Balance’ in tungsten. With some levels, hue & saturation and color balance adjustements, I got it as close as my laptop screen can get. Anyone got any tips on quick color adjustment in camera settings, or in photoshop? I know that ‘Aperture’ has a nice ‘temperature’ adjustment.

Photography grows as a respected medium in India

There was an interesting article in the Wall Street Journal last week. Not only does it mention photographers like Raghu Rai and Dayanita Singh but also points to some new photo galleries in Delhi like “PhotoInk.”  Their director says “”The fact is, we need to have more collectors than speculators. If you can’t see the work on somebody’s wall, how are you going to develop an aesthetic or a taste for it?” They have some great work on their website that I could definately see on my walls. I particularly like the series of Dileep Prakash called “The Anglo Indians.” There’s an interesting article here that talks about what an ‘Anglo-Indian’ is and their role in Indian culture. Briefly the Anglo-Indians are people who have mixed Indian and British ancestry (a dying group since the British left the subcontinent in ‘47).

Steve Martin and his duelling banjo

Steve Martin’s been on all the talk shows this week promoting the “Pink Panther 2” (which I sort of want to see in a completely inexplicable kind of way) but more interestingly his own Banjo CD called “The Crow.” That led me to find this awesome clip from “The Muppets.”
