If that title doesn’t get me flagged then I don’t know what will, but I just woke up this morning and got this email (below) in my inbox. I also just watched a documentary called “The Future of Food” that talked about genetically modified food and its impact on our health and the methods of farming around the world. It wasn’t the most interesting documentary until the end, when it brought the ‘terminator gene‘ into play. Here is why it terrifies me:
“The terminator gene is a specific genetic sequence inserted into a seed’s DNA. Once activated by a synthetic chemical catalyst of the manufacturer’s choosing, the sequence renders the seed and crop it produces sterile. Patented by the USDA and Delta and Pine Land Co., now owned by Monsanto, this terminator technology has no agricultural or economic benefits for farmers or consumers. The only motivation is to protect intellectual property rights, according to owners of the technology“
Monsanto have already been suing farmers all over North America for the use of their patented corn crop, when the farmers never planted the seed, it had just naturally crossed into their fields. What would happen if the terminator gene just spread naturally across all crops???

At first sight, it seems strange that the Government should rank influenza as the biggest threat facing the country. After all, flu is a familiar foe. It turns up every winter. And though it does kill some people – very old, very young, or already infirm – the worst that most of us needs to fear is a few unpleasant days in bed.
In an age which has defeated smallpox, and is even steadily beating back cancer, it would not seem to present much of a problem. Wealthier and healthier than ever, we have come to assume that we left the threat of devastating plagues behind way back in history. In comparison with the much-publicised terrorist threat, it seems small beer indeed.
