Illogical and probably momentary love of B&W
I flashed a few frames today with my white balance set to tungsten, so I had to desaturate them to make the images bearable. This got me started with other images and for some reason got me excited about black and white photography. I’m sure this won’t last the weekend, so don’t worry.
I imagine that my conversation with supermodel Helena Christensen (and girlfriend of the lead singer of Interpol) had a subliminal affect. I asked her about her own photography and she told me that she has a show up in the UN right now that she shot in Peru on Polaroid 665 film. Not a bad time to be exhibiting work when a building’s full of world leaders.
Not Ideal Working Conditions
I had no idea who Justin Bieber was, but apparently I am not the demographic. This scene was behind the red carpet tonight.
Gimme! Coffee – a 5lb Bag of Crack
You have to love a company that sends coffee in the mail that was roasted 4 days ago. If you haven’t taken my advice and ordered any, go HERE now and buy some. Enter Coupon SEP0925E for a discount on some of their coffees. There isn’t a bad roast in the selection but I would highly recommend their “Cup of Excellence” selections – they’re always good!
Go to the Mott St or Lorimer St locations for a cup of the best coffee in NYC (..well in the top 3). They took the ‘Mad Cupid’ off the menu but it can still be ordered if you ask nicely, and it’s totally worth the pleasantries.
Grandpa’s Breakfast of Champions
My grandfather knew how to eat amazing things like icecream covered in heavy cream. This sausage sandwich was my favorite thing thing he used to make me when I was maliciously abandoned by my unloving parents on their incredible houseboat surrounded by rusty shipwrecks for me to explore. You’ve got to fry the sausages (bought at your local Irish butcher – American ones don’t work) butter the bread and cover it in HP or Daddy’s Sauce. The final trick is to cut it into quarters and remove the crusts (which I haven’t done because you end up with half your breakfast gone).
Pearl Jam – The Fixer
In London in 1995, it was not cool to be a Pearl Jam fan, but it wasn’t uncool either. Hardly any of my friends had heard of them. They were all too busy slugging pints over Chumbawumba and lusting after the Spice Girls. So I quietly built my CD collection of American alternative music and only shared it with a few of my friends, not knowing that a few years later I was going to move to the States and my taste in music was not as alternative as I thought. Eddie Vedder’s notoriety in the UK was so poor that in 1996 I was able to talk to him for 10 minutes on a subway platform without anyone interrupting.
Their new album is pretty good and seems to show some return to the form of the early days. The first single to be released – The Fixer – is a solid Pearl Jam song that I think slips immediately into the classic playlist. I know that it’s not cool of me to have 2 of their albums on my desert island records but I likes what I likes.

Incredible Ancient Art – Shiva??
I can’t quite determine who this god or goddess is, I think it could be Shiva based on the trident in it’s right hand. Whoever it is, you have to respect a culture that worships a God who cut off their own head and drink the blood squirting from their neck. I took this picture in a museum in Nepal in 2003 and have never seen anything quite like it. The simplicity of the line work and the single color are what made this stand out and make it unlike all the other thangka’s I’ve seen.
Flash Malfunction…
It must have sucked for Erin Lucas to have been on the receiving end of my flash malfunction. It’s gotta be annoying enough to have strobes blasting at you all day, but then to have one on full power must make it even worse. I had to disconnect all cords from my 580EXII and remove the batteries, thankfully it reset itself and hasn’t repeated the incident. I should submit these to Iheartphotography.com blog!
I’m borrowing a lens…
This is a fly that landed on our lamp last night while I was testing the 300mm 2.8 that I’m borrowing/storing for PictureGroup. It couldn’t be better timing as I got booked for a Trump Charity event on his golf course with Jimmy Fallon and guests. It should be a fun day in a golf cart.
