The places I end up…

Splash

I spent a few hours hanging around inside and outside of Splash Nightclub last night for some pictures of Kylie Minogue. I couldn’t have felt more out of place, although Kylie seemed right at home.

Can you photograph this for free?

This video has been out for a while now, but is still relevant and relates to scenarios I deal with every day as a freelance photographer trying to get hired for events, weddings, etc…

The Stone Temple Pilots make a come back

stonetemple

In the middle of the most incredible month where I met and shot loads of really interesting people, I got to photograph the Stone Temple Pilots after a radio session at Sirius XM. Many moons ago, I was an angst ridden 16 year old, heading off to my first Rock and Roll concert alone to see them live at Brixton Academy. This month I also got to meet and photograph His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Jodie Foster, Cesar Millan, Hugh Laurie and also Damian Marley and Sean Lennon, the children of two of the best musicians the world has ever seen. Although this isn’t why I got my MFA, it’s turning into a pretty great way to make a living right now.

It’s been a busy 2 weeks which is why I’ve been ignoring my blog. Here is a snippet

House Season Finale – 5D Mark ii

I’ve hardly used the video feature of my Canon 5D Mark ii camera, I keep meaning on playing around with it but haven’t had anything that I want to make a video of yet. I can’t wait to see the season finale of House shot entirely with a 5D Mark ii.

Marina Abramović’s “Reperformances” at MOMA

We finally got to MOMA to see the Marina Abramovic show, and I was quite pleasantly surprised. I’d normally say that I don’t enjoy performance art very much, and have rarely maintained interest at museum retrospectives of performance artists. The mix of video, photo and live performance makes the show easily accessible and pretty enjoyable.

MArina2

In the main hall there is Abromovic sitting in a chair opposite a member of the general public. Apparently some people end up in tears - marinaabramovicmademecry.tumblr.com. In the main exhibit, I was surprised by how powerful it was walking through a doorway with naked strangers either side. Although the space is wider than the original performance and the nude models were more like models than the general public, it was still uncomfortable squeezing through two completely naked bodies.

Making Life Difficulter

I think it’s great that we’ve had such advances in technology, but honestly I think we’re on a downward spiral when someone’s recording news worthy content on an ipod nano (and getting in my shot)…

I was made to shoot a show from the back balcony not that long ago, and this was the opening scene. A whole audience of front row photographers who probably had their content on youtube/flickr before I had anything out.

George Parrino’s Studio at SUNY Purchase

I was helping my old thesis advisor clean out some of his studio today. It mainly consisted of throwing away boxes of old baby clothes (his son is now 27) and sorting through paperwork. It reminded me of what an amazing person and artist he is…

Parrino1

The painting on the left is a portrait of him done by one of his more recent students. The painting on the right is his most recent work.

Parrino2

This is my favorite piece by him, done many years ago I suspect. Unfortunately the stretchers have started to warp.

Parrino3

“If you see the Buddha, hit him with a stick” he would often tell in class.

Canon 85mm F1.8

If you’ve never been to B&H, looking to buy a lens, and come home with some pictures that look like this, then you’re not an official camera nerd.

I ended up buying the 85mm 1.8, but was close to spending all my pocket money on the 135mm 2.0. I’m saving up to upgrade to the 70-200mm 2.8.

It’s not easy being GREEN

It was George’s final school production this weekend. It was a musical based around the music of Joe Raposo who wrote a lot of the songs on Sesame St. The kermit song made my mum cry every time…
